"Failure is knowledge, and knowledge is good." Steve Ritter, VP and GM, Lexmark International
Just before Thanksgiving I had the pleasure of having lunch with Steve Ritter, VP and GM of Lexmark International. He
made a very important point that I am going to share with you now.
People tend to be afraid of "failure." When a project doesn't work out as planned, a proposed soution turns out to
be a dead end, etc., people often see this as a "failure." Mr. Ritter pointed out that this is really knowledge, and
that is good -- it is what everyone is after. The point is to identify the difficulty as early as possible and learn
from it.
Here's what can go wrong: if this knowledge is identified as "failure," people become hesitant to admit to it. They
fail to learn from it because they are too busy hiding it.
Maybe this would make a good New Year's Resolution: worry less about "failure," and focus more on learning.
